The authors have reviewed the historical development of the concept of organic mental disorsers in this article. Bonhoeffer's concept of 'exogenous reaction type' and its develop ment by Bleuler M, the classification by Schneider, the concept of
'transit syndrome' developed by Wieck and the organized classification proposed by Fish are briefly introduced. Moreover, the vicissitude of DSM system in the classification of organic mental disorders are reviewed. Finally, some issues of past
and
current debates in organic mental disorder are also discussed.
